Description
“The painting takes its title from the very familiar Cape Afrikaans colloquial saying , “hulle maak vis en vleis van ….” (they are making fish and meat of…) referring to when someone is seen as having a personal bias. It essentially means “choosing sides” or giving preference to one person over the other, and in most cases siblings or family members.
The idea is to celebrate these sayings that are dying out and used less and less, in everyday Cape language.
I found out that the broader Afrikaans community have a similar saying but used differently as in “sy is vis en vleis” (she is fish and meat) referring to essentially a female with brains and beauty.
Every generation develops their own slang and colloquial sayings but some of these sayings have been used for 100’s of years and by visually celebrating everything about this City I hope to contribute to the preservation of the Cape heritage.”
