Within South Africa we courier your artwork to your door - the shipping cost will show at the checkout.

When shipping art internationally, two primary options are commonly considered: crated and rolled. Crating involves securely packaging the artwork in a custom-built crate, providing maximum protection against physical damage but often resulting in higher shipping costs due to size and weight.
On the other hand, rolling art involves taking stretched paintings off the frame, carefully wrapping the artwork and placing it in a protective tube. This method is more cost-effective and suitable for flexible pieces.
Choosing between crating and rolling depends on the specific artwork's size, fragility, and budget, as well as the destination's shipping requirements and regulations.

We will be in touch regarding the best options for you.

    Description

“My deep love for the ocean is inspired by its contrasting energy which are both powerful and peaceful. This mermaid sculpture arose from my fascination and connection to a secret rock pool on the edge of the ocean which, to some of us locals, is known as “The Magic Mussel Pool.” The path to this pool requires a tricky clamber down many rocks, but once standing at the edge of its beauty, a whispered “Wow” escapes one’s lips.

The patterns and shapes of the sea creatures living in the pool inspired the texture of my mermaid’s tail and hair. I wanted her to feel as if she was a living part of the breathing sea life within the pool. The use of bronze gives the sculpture a sense of timelessness, created through the ancient lost wax method of casting, which involves the natural elements of heat, water, and air. The polished stainless steel base complements the nautical theme, and the reflection of the sculpture on its surface enhances the magic and movement., just like water

I wanted to evoke a feeling of spontaneous, and magical surprise. The feeling of the complex interplay between a human experience like visiting ‘The Magic Mussel Pool’ and the various facets of our lives. This mermaid embodies different aspects of feminine power: Persephone symbolizes the duality of innocence and maturity, life and death, while Aphrodite represents love, attraction, and the creative force of nature. She teaches us that within each woman lies the strength of the ocean, the magic of creation, and the timeless beauty of the natural world.”

    Rix Wellmann

Throughout her life, Rix Wellmann has felt a profound connection between the images in her mind and the emotions they evoke. For her, perception extends beyond the visible into the emotional layers beneath everyday life. Her work seeks to capture the magical space between reality and feeling.

Art has always been her anchor and a language beyond words. From an early age, she recognised a heightened sensitivity to the energy of people, animals, and nature – both a gift and a challenge that shapes her creative practice. This awareness drives her to express the emotional essence of every subject she sculpts, paints, or draws.

Her work brings together human form and the movement of nature in pieces that are tender, sincere, sometimes humorous, yet quietly tenacious. She believes art is not a replica of life but a means to create moments of recognition and joy.

Although she works across various mediums, sculpture remains her first love. Through the immediacy of shaping material, she gives tangible form to intangible emotions. Her work invites viewers to pause, feel deeply, and rediscover beauty in life’s smallest moments.

Rix Wellmann is represented by The Artists Gallery in Cape Town.
