Phillip Mabote, born in Qwa-Qwa, Free State, in 1982, is a distinguished artist who predominantly works in the medium of printmaking, specializing in linocut. He currently resides and works in Protea Glen, Soweto, Johannesburg, South Africa.
He studied Professional Printmaking at the renowned Artist Proof Studio from 2007 to 2009. During his time as a student, Mabote actively participated in the Sonke Gender Justice Awareness Campaign and contributed to the Studio’s outreach program by teaching children aged 6 to 14 years.
Mabote expresses gratitude to the Artist Proof Studio for its pivotal role in his artistic development, helping him achieve his dreams and elevate his standing in the art world. His dedication to his craft and passion for sharing his knowledge continues to inspire and influence both his peers and the next generation of artists.
Mabote has showcased his talent through various exhibitions, including a solo show at the Candice Berman Gallery and group exhibitions at Lizamore and Associates, the South African Fine Art Print Fair, the Gordon Institute of Business Science, and the Industrial Development Corporation, among others.
Mabote’s artistic philosophy is deeply rooted in the exploration of identity and self-discovery, inspired by the quote, “If a bird believes it is an eagle long enough, it will eventually end up soaring like one,” by Matshona Dhliwayo.
This reflects his belief in the transformative power of self-perception and determination. His work delves into the profound questions of human existence and personal origin, a theme that has intrigued artists, spiritualists, and thinkers throughout history.
A resident of Johannesburg, Mabote’s print-making journey has been marked by significant achievements and collaborations. He fondly recalls the challenge of working with the specific color palette required by the Hollard brief as a highlight of his career. His piece, “Journey in Pieces,” draws inspiration from Hollard’s ethos of joy and the interplay between past and future, symbolizing the emergence of light.
