Within South Africa we courier your artwork to your door - the shipping cost will show at the checkout.

When shipping art internationally, two primary options are commonly considered: crated and rolled. Crating involves securely packaging the artwork in a custom-built crate, providing maximum protection against physical damage but often resulting in higher shipping costs due to size and weight.
On the other hand, rolling art involves taking stretched paintings off the frame, carefully wrapping the artwork and placing it in a protective tube. This method is more cost-effective and suitable for flexible pieces.
Choosing between crating and rolling depends on the specific artwork's size, fragility, and budget, as well as the destination's shipping requirements and regulations.

We will be in touch regarding the best options for you.

    Description

A Unique Collaboration: Hermien van der Merwe & Maureen Visagé

This striking new piece is the result of an exciting collaboration between sculptor Maureen Visagé and painter Hermien van der Merwe. A bold, hand-built clay vessel—one of Maureen’s signature forms—becomes a canvas for Hermien’s textured celebration of fynbos.

Painted on leather-hard clay with rich underglazes, intricately carved with intaglio marks, and finished with luminous glazes and eight-carat gold luster, the vessel undergoes a thrilling transformation in the kiln. The result is a powerful fusion of form and surface—earthy, elegant, and entirely unique.

    Hermien van der Merwe

Hermien van der Merwe draws deep inspiration from the indigenous Cape Fynbos surrounding her home on the slopes of Table Mountain in Cape Town. Her walks through the Table Mountain Nature Reserve immerse her in the rhythms, textures, and scents of nature, nurturing a contemplative creative process grounded in her reverence for the natural and spiritual world.

Her paintings explore the effects of fire, wind, rain, and drought on the Cape Fynbos biome. Working intuitively from memory, she translates the landscape’s energy into expressive oil paintings filled with dynamic brushwork and vibrant colour, often on an expansive scale.

In 2021, one of her works was selected as a backdrop for the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway station, with additional large-scale pieces later installed at both stations.

Trained at the University of Stellenbosch, she has been a full-time artist for over twenty years. Committed to raising awareness of the Fynbos biome, she is represented in Cape Town by The Artist Gallery and regularly participates in The Travelling Art Gallery.
