Claude Chandler
Claude Chandler, born into Durban’s dynamic art scene to two accomplished artists, was immersed in creativity from an early age. His passion for portraiture began in 2005 when he painted his high school teachers, a project that quickly attracted commissions and set him on a professional artistic path. He honed his technical skills and developed a distinct artistic voice while studying Fine Art at Durban University of Technology. After graduating in 2011, he relocated to Cape Town, integrating into the city’s thriving creative community.
Chandler has gained recognition both locally and internationally, exhibiting at major art fairs including the AKAA Fair in Paris, Stroke Art Fair in Munich, FNB Joburg Art Fair, and the Affordable Art Fair in London and Amsterdam. As a key artist represented by The Travelling Art Gallery, he has shown extensively across Europe, with cities such as Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Ludwigshafen, and Palma de Mallorca hosting his work. In 2022, he completed a successful residency and solo exhibition, Space and Time, in Berlin.
In 2023, Chandler collaborated with ARTsouthAFRICA to produce a series of limited-edition works using the patented Diasec technique. These pieces are available globally through The Travelling Art Gallery and locally via The Artists Gallery, which also presented his work at the 2024 Positions Art Fair in Berlin.
Beyond portraiture, Chandler is known for his vibrant street art murals throughout Cape Town, bringing a bold urban energy to his practice. Across mediums, his work explores perception, identity, and the evolving relationship between the self and the digital world.
Locally, he is exclusively represented by The Artists Gallery.
