Robin Kutinyu's talent was born from a passion for wildlife that took root as early as the age of five. His deep understanding of form and beauty was nurtured by curiosity and a profound admiration for his father— a sculptor whose hands animated stone into vigorously lifelike wildlife figures. Born in Zimbabwe, Kutinyu sold his first collection of birds and turtles at the tender age of ten. Since then, he has been completely absorbed by the movement and anatomy of both animals and the human form, bringing them vividly to life in his sculptures.

Using only natural materials, Robin Kutinyu channels the raw spirit of nature, awakening the elemental structure of each medium he touches to reveal the soul of his subjects. Whether animal or human, each sculpture is imbued with a quiet, powerful presence.

“I try to capture the essence of my subject by capturing a certain moment of what is happening,” he explains. “My work is about the soul of my subject, not just the outer form worked to perfection. I have made my way from understanding my material and the possibilities it gives me, to shaping the intangible—an idea, an image, or a concept.”

Working in the silence of the desert is, for Kutinyu, a kind of retreat. It is there that many sculptures begin to take shape, emerging from stone with their first whispers of expression. For him, moving stones that weigh several tons is not a burden, but a refreshing and invigorating exercise. The transformation from raw material to finished piece keeps him excited and engaged throughout the creative process.

Robin Kutinyu has worked with a wide range of media, including alabaster, zebrastone, wonderstone, and semi-precious stones from Zimbabwe, as well as wood, wax, metal, cement, bronze, granite, marble, picturestone, sandstone, and jasper sourced from South Africa, Italy, Namibia, and Madagascar.

While he has explored many materials, his recent work has focused predominantly on bronze, which he values for its strength, durability, and the creative freedom it offers. With bronze, he is able to craft delicate and expressive compositions that endure.

Robin Kutinyu's work has been exhibited internationally, including at the National Zoo & Aquarium in Canberra, Australia, Safari Club International in Reno, and Afridesia Gallery in New Jersey, USA.
