Richie Madyira

Formally trained at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe School of Visual Art & Design, he has developed a distinctive artistic practice that combines technical refinement with powerful social and cultural narratives. Having relocated to South Africa in search of greater opportunity, Madyira's personal experiences have profoundly shaped his creative voice. His work reflects the complexities of displacement, belonging, and cultural identity, yet extends beyond autobiography to explore broader questions surrounding African identity, resilience, and the shared human experience. Rather than presenting literal depictions of everyday life, he creates layered visual narratives that invite viewers to engage with themes of memory, transformation, and belonging. Central to Madyira's practice is an exploration of fashion as a visual language. Drawing inspiration from the evolving styles of the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s alongside contemporary interpretations of dress, he positions the Black figure as both subject and storyteller. His paintings investigate Black Dandyism as an expression of dignity, individuality, resistance, and celebration, demonstrating how clothing, colour, and personal style communicate confidence, heritage, aspiration, and cultural identity. Garments, fabrics, and historical references become symbolic devices through which personal and collective histories are preserved and reimagined. His vibrant colour palette is intentionally contrasted with black-and-white photographic references, creating visual tension while exploring themes of visibility, class, race, and perception. By blending contemporary portraiture with archival influences, Madyira creates works that honour those who came before while imagining new possibilities for the future. His paintings celebrate identity not as something fixed, but as something continually shaped through memory, culture, and lived experience. Throughout his career, Madyira has exhibited extensively in solo and group exhibitions across Southern Africa, earning recognition for his thoughtful visual language and compelling storytelling. In 2025, he was selected to participate in the prestigious eightweek Indibano Art Residency in Dallas, Texas, an experience that further broadened his artistic perspective and international engagement. His work continues to resonate with collectors for its authenticity, conceptual depth, and emotional richness. Richie Marley Madyira is represented by The Artists Gallery in Cape Town. His work has also been exhibited internationally through The Travelling Art Gallery's group exhibitions across Europe, further expanding his presence within the contemporary art landscape.
