Description
The painting “A Traveler’s Journey” reflects the path of life — a path that is unique for every person. We may look to others and learn from their successes or their failures, but ultimately we must walk our own road. Every step must be taken by us alone. Every lesson has to pass through the gateway of our own experience before it becomes something we truly understand.
We begin life with an innocent heart, and as we move forward, some of that innocence — and sometimes our optimism — fades. Yet the aim of many spiritual teachings has always been the same: to return to the purity of a child’s heart, but with the awareness and wisdom of an adult.
It is the experiences we gather on our journey that shape us. We uncover ourselves gradually, step by step, just as the face in the painting emerges from the impersonal shadows of its background. One of life’s greatest challenges is to keep that innocent heart alive despite hardship, disappointment, and the many trials along the road.
The painting is also inspired by a poem by James Allen, which is inscribed into the artwork:
“All ways are waiting for my feet to be tread.
The light and dark, the living and the dead,
The broad and narrow way, the high and low,
The good and bad, and with quick step or slow,
I now may enter any way I will,
And find by walking which is good, which ill.”
