Isabel Crause

Isabel Crause (b. 1980, South Africa) is a contemporary botanical artist based in Cape Town whose work explores personal growth, emotion, and trans-formation through layered mixed-media artworks. Inspired by nature and abstract forms, her paintings reflect the delicate balance between strength and vulnerability, chaos and calm, and the ongoing process of change that shapes human experience.

Working across mixed media, Crause creates richly textured compositions using abstract botanical elements as visual metaphors for emotional and personal development. Rather than portraying nature realistically, she uses organic forms, movement, and layering to express feelings, memories, and inner experiences. Her work speaks to the idea that growth is often both beautiful and uncomfortable, much like nature itself.

Her artistic process is intuitive and expressive, combining structure with spontaneity to create works that feel both grounded and atmospheric. Through layers of texture, mark-making, and colour, she builds compositions that invite quiet reflection and emotional connection. In 2024, Crause was awarded a residency at the Château d’Orquevaux in France, an experience that continues to influence and expand her creative practice. Exposure to a new environment and artistic community deepened her exploration of nature, memory, and emotional expression within her work.
Her artworks have been exhibited in group exhibitions locally and are held in private collections across South Africa, France, the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, Dubai, and the Netherlands.
