Claudia Gurwitz, born 1976, is a South African artist whose creative journey has been shaped by both fine art and a lifelong dedication to holistic practices. After initially studying at the Michaelis School of Fine Art, she spent many years establishing and running successful yoga centres before returning to painting under the mentorship of Fine Art lecturer & teacher Julia Teale. Since embracing her career as a professional artist in 2007, Gurwitz has presented multiple solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group exhibitions and art fairs across South Africa.

Known for her magnified, vibrant botanical paintings, Claudia Gurwitz has been exploring a new direction in her artistic practice through a more human narrative. While continuing to draw inspiration from the natural environment, her latest body of work brings the quiet intimacy of nature into dialogue with the human experience, capturing moments that are both deeply personal and universally relatable.

Each painting tells a story. It is a private, precious moment that invites the viewer to pause, reflect, and appreciate the simple joy of spending time with ourselves and one another outdoors. These contemplative scenes celebrate the restorative power of nature and the sense of presence that can be found in life’s quieter moments.

Light plays a central role in Gurwitz’s work, which she depicts as a moving, living entity. She is fascinated by the way light dapples, stretches, and transforms the surfaces it touches, bringing each composition to life. In her paintings, the surrounding natural elements are as alive and expressive as the people inhabiting them.

Nature is never merely a backdrop but an equal participant in the narrative, creating a harmonious relationship between the landscape and the human figure.

Gurwitz’s artistic practice is deeply connected to her lifelong love of yoga, which has been a guiding force in her life since 1994. The symmetry and balance found in nature, mirrored within the human body, continue to inspire her work. Both are built upon structure, harmony, and the delicate tension of opposing forces existing in perfect counterpoint, themes that subtly underpin each composition.

Observation is fundamental to Gurwitz’s creative process. She is drawn to the intricate details of form found in both nature and the human body, from the subtle definition of muscle and the graceful curve of a leaf to the posture of a figure suspended in movement. It is these carefully observed details that give her paintings their quiet emotional resonance.

Through her paintings, Gurwitz conveys the intrinsic unity that pervades the natural world. She reminds us that, as living beings, we inherently belong to our environment, and that reconnecting with nature has a profoundly grounding effect on our physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing. Her work encourages us to slow down, observe more closely, and rediscover the beauty, balance, and sense of belonging that nature so effortlessly provides.

Claudia Gurwitz’s work forms part of the curated artist portfolio of The Artists Gallery.
