Description
“The artwork represents the love and support I received from my grandparents, family, relatives, and community. Though my parents weren’t present to raise me directly, they provided for and supported me from Johannesburg, while I grew up in a rural area called Ribungwani. My grandparents, relatives, and community members were the constant presence in my life, and I titled the artwork “”Comfortable”” to reflect how my grandparents always strived for my well-being. They shielded me from the negative influences affecting other children and guided me towards becoming the best student and person I could be.
I chose hummingbirds as a symbol to express my gratitude for the love, joy, happiness, and beauty my grandparents and community imparted on me. Understanding my culture and identity was challenging during my childhood, but the love and efforts of those around me helped me navigate this journey. The hummingbirds represent the spiritual and cultural beliefs that emphasized love, focus, hope, beauty, joy, happiness, and protection. Through this artwork, I aim to unify and celebrate the profound love and unity that shaped my life.”
